If your loved ones in heaven hear “Get you some of that driver!” then you know that was our Stump! Most people that knew Steven Gregory “Greg” Sams knew that he had a competitive and helpful spirit. February 5, 1971, in Gainesville, FL, gave the world a unique person, who was genuine and had a heart bigger than he was.
“Pickle” as he was so affectionately known by his classmates, grew up in Union County, FL and was a member of the Union County High School Class of 1989. He participated in football, baseball and weightlifting. He was known to be charismatic, friendly, devoted, dependable, honest, and just outright hilarious. Also known to take part in a few mischievous stunts and antics during that time in his life, many of his childhood friends say that there is just no way to describe Pickle unless you knew him. He was that unique!
Upon graduating and realizing that he needed to find an occupation, “Stump” found his way to Watkins Trucking from 1995 to 2006, at which time the company was then sold to FedEx. At both Watkins and FedEx, he became a champion truck driver from August of 1995 to 2015. In March of 2015, Stump took on the role of Driver Advisor and excelled at that role until his peaceful passing at home on Sunday, July 18, 2021. His FedEx coworkers were his family as well, and he was described as being admired by so many people because he was authentic. He was adaptable to almost anything that came his way. Greg could hang out on the deck of a cruise ship or attend a formal and fancy dinner, and either way, he was who he was. His ability to be helpful and happy led to many golf games with lifelong friends. It also propelled him to being a fierce competitor in the Florida Trucking Association’s driving championships from 2004 to 2014 and earned him the 1st place Championship in 2009. His success did not rest alone with him, as he used his skills to motivate and coach others to success as well, both in the driver’s seat and on the golf course. Thus, he is known as “Driver” to many people as well.
Whenever you were with Greg, you were always laughing. He was always joking and had people laughing. Greg loved fishing, hunting, golfing and Jeeping. He was adventurous, hardworking, and likeable. Several of his friends and family described Greg as “one-of-a-kind.”
Greg is survived by his mother Ann Sams, brother Barry Sams (Cathy), sisters Robin Johnson, Lisa Sams, and Sheila Sams all of Lake Butler, FL. Greg is also survived by many doting nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was preceded in death by father Donald Sams, sister Susan Sams, and brother-in-law Ray Johnson.
To celebrate his life, the family will welcome visitors at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Archer-Milton Funeral Home, 55 N. Lake Avenue, Lake Butler, FL. A memorial service will follow at the same location at 3:00 PM. The memorial service will be livestreamed via the Archer-Milton Funeral Home Facebook page. Immediately following the service, a reception will be held at the Lake Butler Woman’s Club, 285 NE 1st Avenue, Lake Butler, FL. Friends, classmates, and family are invited to come share stories and celebrate a life well lived!
“Stump” participated regularly in sponsoring a child’s Shop With a Cop experience in Union County, and he also devoted himself to the Safety Drive for a Cure charity event. Keeping in line with Greg’s never-ending desire to be generous, helpful, and giving, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to one of those causes.
Checks can be mailed to Union County Shop with a Cop, c/o Deputy Shelby Ellis, 55 W. Main St., Lake Butler, FL 32054, or donations can be made to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation’s Safety Drive for a Cure via online at https://team.curethekids.org/give/309271/?fbclid=IwAR22E1EaQt44v-7hfto5aSo0WGKO7orTCXylzIM-bcZkuwke4gb7h9qRdSA#!/donation/checkout.
