Joe Griffis

Joseph C. “Joe” Griffis was born on June 20, 1932 in the heart of Baker County, where he was a lifelong resident. He met his Lord and Savior face to face on February 19, 2025 at his home in Glen St. Mary. He was a faithful man of God who was known for his quick wit, hunting and fishing expertise, and a selfless love and compassion for all.

For over 43 years, Joe worked as a mechanic for CSX, retiring in 1994. He also enjoyed working side by side with his family as they put their 16 acres of land on Mudlake Road to good use. Together, they raised chickens from 1963 to 1989, worked cows, and kept an exemplary garden year round—the harvest of which benefited many in the community.

Although Joe was a hard worker, his heart belonged in the woods. He had a deep respect and appreciation for nature and cherished his time in the great outdoors. He loved to hunt deer, hogs, gators, and more; but he was especially known for his skillful turkey hunting. Fishing was also among his favorite pastimes; one that he enjoyed sharing with his wife, Mavis. Their love for fishing ran so deep that they even spent their honeymoon dropping lines into the Little St. Mary’s river. A match made in heaven! Joe also took the time to share these passions with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; passing his knowledge down to the next generations.

Joe shared a blessed marriage with the love of his life, Mavis Crews Griffis, for 73 and a half years. Their story began in 1950 at the first revival held at Raiford Road Church and they were the first couple to be married there in 1951. From that point on, they remained faithful, serving members of Raiford Road Church. Together, they touched countless lives throughout multiple generations. Their life together is a testament to the goodness of God and how He can powerfully use a marriage that is built on the Rock of Christ Jesus.

Joe leaves behind a legacy filled with love. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mavis; his son, Eddie (Tonda) Griffis; his daughter, Teresa (Glenn) Yarborough; and his adoring grandchildren—Jordan Griffis, Dustin Williams, Lacey (Brent) Ruis, Rile (Jessee) Yarborough, Joel (Abby) Griffis, and Matti (Jeremy) Lee. Joe was also a proud Papa to his 12 great-grandchildren: Jayci, Luke, Paisley, Jake, Hampton, Staiton, Lincoln, Chance, Dalis, Hope Carolina, Heidi, and Austin; and one great-great-granddaughter, Astella. He is also survived by his brother, Harold (Angie) Griffis; sister, Bonnie Varnes; and a host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Nellie Griffis, and siblings: DL Griffis, Allen Griffis, Juanita Conner, Loretta Conner, Frank Griffis, Wayne Griffis, and Ernie Mae Griffis. 

A visitation service will be held on Sunday, February 23, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Raiford Road Church. Following that, his funeral service will take place at the same location on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 11:00 am with Pastor Eddie Griffis and PastorRodney McKendree officiating.
