Mr. John R. Akers, Jr., age 81, of Lake Butler, Florida, passed away on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at Baya Pointe Rehab & Nursing Center in Lake City, FL. Mr. Akers was born on August 26, 1937, in Charleston, WV, to the late John R. Akers, Sr., and the late Pauline Bailey Akers. He moved to the Lake Butler area 50 years ago and worked as a correctional officer for the Florida Department of Corrections at the New River West Unit until his retirement. He was a member of the Lake Butler Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Mr. Akers was known for his love of his family and his love of his Florida Gators. He was preceded in death by both parents, and his wife, Ruth Jeraline Akers.
Mr. Akers is survived by his three sons, William "Buddy" Woodrow Ogden, Jr. of Lake Butler, FL, J. Russell (Dorinda) Akers, III of Old Town, FL, and Stewart Kirby of Homosassa Springs, FL; four daughters, Sherry (Doug) Barnett, Susan (Millard) Bell, Ane-Elise Worthington, and Kristin M. Akers all of Lake Butler, FL; one sister, Katherine "Kitty" (Joe) Bennett of Charleston, WV. 17 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and numerous extended family also survive.
A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Akers will be held on Tuesday, November 6, at the Lake Butler Ward of LDS, at 10:00 AM. The family will receive friends for a visitation and gathering on November 5, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Chapel of ARCHER FUNERAL HOME. Interment will follow services at Oak Grove Cemetery in Lake Butler. Bishop Paul Waters will be officiating services.
