James "Jim" H. Harrell, Jr., age 85, met his Lord and Savior on April 2, 2025, at the Haven Hospice E.T. York Care Center in Gainesville, Florida, after a life filled with purpose and community spirit. Born on January 5, 1940, in Nashville, Georgia, Jim was the embodiment of quiet strength, a man whose heart thrived on serving others. As a loving husband and father, he took great pride in providing for his family throughout his life.
After nine dedicated years in the U.S. Army, Jim set sail into civilian life, steering tugboats across the waters of Virginia, Florida, and California for a decade. Upon returning to shore, Jim became a licensed master electrician, working for himself and the University of Florida for 19 years. His proudest project involved his commitment to Sardis Baptist Church, where he oversaw the electrical work and many other details for the new church building, leaving a legacy that would resonate for generations.
Jim was deeply woven in the Worthington Springs community where he was the caretaker for Chastain Park, the community park, and the community center. His passionate involvement extended to teaching Sunday School and mentoring Royal Ambassadors (RAs) at Sardis Baptist Church, sharing the Word of God with a gentle spirit that touched all who knew him. Jim was also a proud Mason with the local Lake Butler Lodge.
Jim leaves behind his beloved wife of 46 years, Patricia Harrell of Lake Butler, and children: Karla (Scott) Voorhees of Clermont, FL, Patricia (Angelo) Iezzi of Nashville, TN, Amy Elkins of St. Petersburg, FL, Chrissie (Corey) Griffis of Lake Butler, FL, and Travis (Cynthia) Harrell of Palatka, FL, 10 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild who will miss his warmth and guidance.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James H. Harrell, Sr. and Muriel Fender Harrell, along with his son Tyler Harrell, and siblings Mitchel Harrell, Jerry Harrell, Carol Harrell, and Margaret Barber.
A visitation will be on Saturday, April 5, 2025, from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00am, all taking place at Sardis Baptist Church, Worthington Springs, FL.
