Daniel Elbert Nettles, affectionately known as Bert, was born on August 16, 1934, on Ellerbee Curve in Raiford, FL. He passed away peacefully on September 6, 2024, at Windsor Health and Rehab, leaving behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and warmth will be cherished by all who knew him.
Bert a proud graduate of Bradford County High School, Class of 1953. His commitment to service was evident early in his life; he spent eight years with the Army National Guard, embodying the values of duty and honor. Following his military service, he began his career with the Department of Transportation, eventually transferring to the Department of Corrections. Bert dedicated an incredible 39 years to this profession, where he started as a manager of the tobacco factory before becoming the maintenance supervisor when that division was disbanded. His strong work ethic was established at a young age, and he was known for his ability to work well with his hands, which he applied diligently to his farm and cattle.
A man of many passions, Bert found joy tending to Pioneer Family Farm, located off CR 235 on the Lester Johns Memorial Highway. His love for his land was matched only by his involvement in community organizations. He was a proud member of the Bradford Masonic Lodge #35, Eastern Star, and Shriners, where he formed bonds that extended beyond mere friendship.
Bert was not only a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 67 years, Mary “Betty” Nettles, but also a cherished uncle to his niece and nephews: Sharlynn “Shary” and Gene Gordon, Chris Gordon, Ayden Gordon and Clarissa and Blaise Thaw. He formed deep connections with friends who became family over the years, including Samantha (Billy) Brooks and Beth (Bob) Boone.
His presence touched many lives, and he will be remembered for his loyalty, kindness, and the unforgettable warmth he brought to every gathering. He possessed a unique ability to make those around him feel loved and valued, leaving a mark on their hearts.
A graveside service will be held in his honor on September 9, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Elzey Chapel Cemetery in Lake Butler, FL. Bert was a simple man, therefore the family is requesting casual attire for the service. Also, in lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Pine Hill Masonic Lodge #9, 16768 SE 91st Street, Lake Butler, FL 32054.
